TAM blog: Tattoo Collectors, Jason Cornell

22 Sep 2012 | Categories: General, Interviews, News, Travel, Videos | Posted by: Sean Herman

Recently I was lucky enough to write a blog for Tattoo Artists Magazine profiling some tattoo collectors I have been fortunate enough to know. The most recent one is on Jason Cornell. Here’s a quick exert from the blog.

“I had been keeping up with Jason Cornell for quite a bit longer than I originally thought. I had been a huge fan of Shawn Barber’s work and have always followed when he puts new stuff online, which I am sure is a practice of amount a million people, because he is amazing. He did a tattoo of a small group of skulls on the side of a knee, and it just looked so dang awesome. It is one of those pieces you tend to always remember.

TAM Blog on Tattoo Collectors: Jason Taylor

17 Sep 2012 | Categories: Featured Blogs, General, Interviews, News, Travel, Videos | Posted by: Sean Herman

I recently wrote a new blog for Tattoo Artist Magazine on tattoo collectors. They are separating it three different installments, each being on one of the collectors that I profiled. The first is on my good friend Jason Taylor. Jason is an awesome guy and a good friend of mine. Here’s a little bit of the piece I wrote on him.
“My first interests in tattoos and being tattooed stemmed from my grandfather. He had the classic crawling black panthers on both biceps. I was into art as far back as I can remember and it fascinated me that you could have it on you permanently. At probably 13 I tried to give my self a tattoo with a needle wrapped in thread and some India ink I acquired from art class. I still have a small black blob on my thigh from it. Initially it was a cross. From there I was tattooed by a biker shortly after my 18th birthday, and then some lady in Texas while I was in the Air Force less than a year later. Both of these tattoos were nothing to be proud of and nothing like the images in the tattoo magazines that I bought whenever I could find them. ”

TAM blog on Jeff Ensminger, Part 2

13 Jul 2012 | Categories: Featured Blogs, General, Interviews, News, Travel, Videos | Posted by: Sean Herman

Recently I was lucky enough to write a blog for Tattoo Artist Magazine about my good buddy Jeff Ensminger. Not only is he an awesome tattooer, he also has some of the greatest stories I have ever heard. Here’s a lil bit of one…

““What’s that tattoo on your hand?” (Laughs) She said, “Yeah, it’s this tattoo,” and I was like,
“How did you get this done?” ’cause I didn’t know… How do you get a tattoo? I just thought it was amazing.

She said her brother gave it to her a long time ago. I asked how, and she said, “With a needle and thread,” and she totally went into how you would hand poke this tattoo. Thinking about this now, no teacher should ever tell a kid in the 6th grade how to give themselves a hand poked tattoo. (Laughs)

She realized it right when she said it, she was like, “It’s not a good thing, so you don’t want to do it.” So what did I do that night, I get home, I got the needle, the india ink, the thread, and here I am trying to poke a cross into my hand. I am like a weenie little kid, and I don’t want to poke myself with needles, so I’m trying to do it, but it just didn’t seem to want to go in. So what made the most sense to me was, “How do you INJECT the ink into the skin?” I couldn’t figure that out. I was like, how’s a needle going to INJECT the ink? So the only thing that made sense to me was a syringe. (Laughs)”

You can check out the rest of that story, and the second part of my blog on Jeff at tattooartistmagazineblog.com

Thanks again to Jeff and TAM for giving me the opportunity to bring this blog to ya.

I am going to leave you with some of the songs I can’t get out of my head at this moment…

I was recently fortunate enough to get to write a blog for Tattoo Artist Magazine on my good friend Jeff Ensminger. The blog’s I do for TAM are primarily based in the story telling aspects of tattooing, and Jeff has got some good stories. Here is just a small preview of one of those stories,

“So what did I do that night? I get home, I got the needle, the india ink, the thread, and here I am trying to poke a cross into my hand. I am like a weenie little kid, and I don’t want to poke myself with needles, so I’m trying to do it, but it just didn’t seem to want to go in. Also, next week I am going to be going to see one of my favorite bands of all time, Refused. I really don’t have words for how excited I am. In honor of that, here’s a video from the reunion they have been doing. For me, this is one of those bands that helped shape a lot ideas I hold dear.
