BARC! Fundraiser

01 Aug 2014 | Categories: General, News | Posted by: Sean Herman

One of the major goals we created for ourselves when establishing The Bell Rose Tattoo and Piercing was to set up initiatives to give back to our community.  One of the initiatives will be our monthly charity drive program that will be give back to a selected organization within our community.  The first month of our charity drive program we chose the Baldwin County Humane Society or BARC, a no-kill adoption agency in Fairhope, AL.

According to www.nokilladvocacycenter.org “There are roughly three million dogs and cats killed in U.S. shelters annually because they lack a home, but about 23.5 million Americans add a new dog or cat to their households every year. We do not have a “pet overpopulation” problem; we have a market share challenge.”

A few years ago I came across The Baldwin County Humane Society. While researching the agency I found out all of the great things they’re doing for the welfare of the animals in Baldwin County. Here is a little bit of information about their cause that I pulled from their website that I would like to share with you.

The Baldwin County Humane Society (BARC!) was formed in 1979 as the county’s first animal advocacy group. In 1979, there were no shelters in the county and no voices to speak for the animals. Today we are very lucky to have multiple animal rescue groups all working toward the same goal of eliminating the number of abused and abandoned pets through spay/neuter, education, rescue and adoption. We rescue, rehabilitate, and re-home hundreds of abused, abandoned and neglected pets annually. We do not have a shelter of our own; rather we are an adoption agency.

Alabama State law mandates that counties and municipalities with populations of over 5000 provide animal shelters and animal control services, paid by our tax dollars. The Baldwin County Humane Society works cooperatively with them to place the shelter animals in loving new homes, thus minimizing the tragic necessity of euthanasia due to overcrowded conditions. The majority of our dogs and cats are pulled from local ‘kill’ shelters.  We work closely with shelter staff to identify those individuals who exhibit a temperament most suited to successful adoption.”

Roughly 5 out of every 10 dogs sent to an animal shelter will be euthanized. Each year, between 3-4 million dogs and cats are put to sleep in shelters across the United States.

The Bell  Rose Tattoo & Piercing will be taking donations for the Baldwin County Human Society for the entire month of August. We will conclude the month of August with a flash day on Wednesday August 27th where you can come in and get a piece from an animal themed flash sheet tattooed on you with a portion of the proceeds going to BARC. We will also be doing $25 piercings on the day of the event. All of our artists will be doing walk-in’s that day, including myself. For those who are unable to attend the event, but would still like to participate in donating to such a great cause can participate in the auctioning off of the original sheet of animal themed flash that we are using for the event.
